You can connect an MCP-compatible assistant such as ChatGPT or Claude to Gumnut and work with your photos in natural language. Start with MCP setup to connect your account and choose the access you grant. Gumnut gives assistants structured information about who’s in your photos, what’s happening, where and when they were taken, and camera details. This lets an assistant search and organize your collection without opening every image. Access follows the permissions and library scope you grant; compatible assistants can also request image pixels when needed. Consider your assistant provider’s privacy settings when choosing what to share.

What you can ask for

  • “Find photos of our family at the beach last summer.”
  • “Make an album of the best shots from this trip.”
  • “Show me the places where I took photos in July.”
  • “Help me review these face assignments.”
  • “Every evening, look at photos from the past few days and pick a few cute pictures of my kids for me to share with my parents.”
  • “Periodically review my recent photos for face tags that look wrong. Fix clear mistakes and ask me when you’re unsure.”
The assistant uses Gumnut’s search, metadata, descriptions, albums, and people tools. Hosts that support MCP Apps can display interactive photo grids and album cards inside the conversation.

Creative workflows

If your assistant has image-editing or generation tools, you can ask it to transform a photo and save the result back to your library. Gumnut provides the photo access and storage; the assistant’s tools perform the transformation. MCP’s save_asset stores the result as a new asset, rather than adding to an existing photo’s version chain. Available image tools, visual displays, and background scheduling depend on your assistant. Connecting Gumnut alone does not create an automatic recurring workflow. Review the assistant’s proposed changes when they affect your library.

Control access

An integration’s permitted actions and library scope limit what it can do, alongside your role in each library. You can revoke access. Invitation and member management require the first-party Gumnut app, rather than an assistant. See OAuth and Library Sharing for access details. You can also build your own apps with the API and SDKs, or use Immich clients for another way to browse and back up your photos.
